PSHE Quiz Illustration | Positive Relationships
Manners are important, even in online friendships.

Positive Relationships – Age 11-14

As part of the “social” aspect of PSHE lessons children in KS3 will learn about positive relationships. This is a broad topic and includes friendships, family, and colleagues as well as romantic partners. This quiz, written specifically for children in years 7, 8 and 9, will show them which behaviours they should expect and exhibit in their relationships.

Getting on with others is a key skill if you want to get on in life. Developing and keeping hold of friendships is a two-way thing. It requires give and take on both sides. But it’s not just our friends we need to get on well with. Our family, our classmates, even total strangers we encounter we should always try to be nice to. And we should expect the same in return.

This quiz will help you to spot negative and positive behaviours in yourself and others. More importantly, it should help you to understand the difference.

1 .
You are at school and have been asked to move some chairs. A teacher joins you after a while to help you finish the job. How should you react?
You should thank the teacher
You should ignore the teacher
You should tell the teacher that you are OK on your own
You should ask the teacher to leave
If somebody helps us we should always thank them. It is nice to be thanked. It shows you are appreciated. And even teachers like to be appreciated
2 .
There are many things we expect from a positive friendship. Which of these is NOT one of them?
They should listen to your problems
They should always be kind
They should regularly spend time with you
They should laugh at all your jokes
Good friends should always be kind to each other. They should also listen to each other’s problems and spend some time with you (even if that is only online). Though it is nice when people laugh at your jokes, that isn’t a requirement for a friendship – not every joke is funny after all
3 .
In school you are working in a group. You are in charge of three other people who all have different ideas. Which of the following should you NOT do?
Listen to all the ideas then choose together
Ignore everyone else’s ideas and go with your own
Ask everyone to vote on the idea they think is best
Listen to all the ideas then choose which one is best
Working as part of a team means listening to everyone and giving each other mutual respect. Just because you have been put in charge that does not mean that you can ignore everyone else – even bosses have to consider their workers
4 .
You are in a lift waiting for the doors to close when you notice another person coming towards you. What should you do?
Leave the doors to close
Hold the lift for them
Tell the person to hurry
Tell the person to wait for the next lift
The polite thing to do is to hold the lift for them. Being polite is important – you never know when the roles might be reversed and then you might find yourself having to wait for the next lift
5 .
Heather and Jodie have been best friends since primary school. But Jodie has made new friends online who she messages a lot. This makes heather feel neglected so she secretly checks Jodie’s phone to see what she has been talking about. Is this acceptable behaviour?
Yes. If Jodie has nothing to hide then what’s the problem?
No. Our phones are personal and private. No one should look at them without our permission
Yes. Jodie is being unfair and Heather has a right to know what is going on
No. Heather should have been honest about checking Jodie’s phone
Our phones are very personal, much like diaries. So, looking through someone's phone without their permission is a violation of their privacy. It doesn’t matter who they are: friend, partner, family or whatever. You do not have the right to look at their phone unless they tell you that you can
6 .
Your little brother takes something of yours without permission and breaks it. What should you do?
Hit him
Shout at him
Talk to your parents about it
Break his toys
It is not up to you to discipline your siblings. That is your parents’ job. Talk to them and tell them what has happened in a calm way
7 .
Some of who we think of as our friends might not be really. Which of these is a sign that you do have a real friend?
They share some of their secrets with you
They talk about you behind your back
They criticise you a lot
They want you to share all your secrets
Good friends will only rarely criticise you, and usually only when they are asked to. They will not gossip about you and they will not pressurise you into telling them anything you are not comfortable with
8 .
Stephen and Fiona made friends online. They messaged each other often but one day Fiona did not reply to Stephen so he immediately “unfriended” her. Is this a reasonable thing to do?
No. Sometimes our friends are too busy to get back to us right away
Yes. Fiona was rude not to reply to Stephen
No. Stephen should have waited a few days before he unfriended Fiona
Yes. Fiona is ignoring him so obviously no longer wants to be friends
Sometimes it can seem like our online friends are ignoring us. But there can be many reasons why someone replies late to a message. They may have no credit, or no internet. They might be busy or there could be many other reasons. Before breaking off the friendship Stephen should have waited for Fiona to get back to him and explain
9 .
Your mum asks you to put the bin out for the dustmen. You do this for her. How should she react?
By buying you a gift
By letting you stay out later than usual
By giving you some money
By saying “Thank you”
There are many jobs that need doing around the home and, as you live there, it is only right that you do a bit to help. However, nobody gets paid for doing these tasks so it is unfair to expect a reward. A thank you is enough
10 .
You have important news to tell your boss but they are deep in conversation with somebody else. What should you do?
Walk away and come back later
Tell your boss the news straight away
Say “Excuse me” to get their attention
Forget it. Someone else can tell them the news
Butting into other people’s conversations is very rude. If you need to tell someone something quickly the polite thing to do is to say “Excuse me” first
