Modern Israel
According to industry officials, Israel has designed the airline industry's most impenetrable flight security.

Modern Israel

Israel is considered one of the most advanced countries in southwest Asia in economic and industrial development terms, and in 2010, the country was ranked 17th among the world's most economically-developed nations. Although as a country it dates back to the reign of King Saul in 1,079BC, at a little over 65 years since independence, it is a relatively modern country. It is one of the few democracies in the middle east, and the only country where Christians, Muslims and Jews are all free to vote.

1 .
Israel is responsible for some notable modern-day inventions. Among those are ....
anti-virus technology and the USB flash drive
cellular phones and instant phone messaging
the Pentium MMX and Centrino microprocessors and Windows NT and XP
all three of the above
Despite its size and relatively small population, Israel has been responsible for some major inventions and discoveries in the world of computing, chemistry, physics, optics, agriculture and medicine
2 .
The history of modern Israel actually began in ....
1880
1901
1948
1960
It was during the 1880s when the first Zionist immigrants came to Palestine, which was then under Ottoman rule, to join the small existing Jewish community. As a result of the First World War, Palestine came under the control of Great Britain, whose Balfour Declaration called for a Jewish National Home in Palestine
3 .
In 1988, whose party was banned from Israeli elections for inciting racism, the only disqualification of a party ever upheld by Israel’s Supreme Court?
Egyptian-born American citizen, El Sayyid Nosair
Baruch Goldstein, American-born Israeli physician and religious extremist
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
Rabbi Meir Kahane and his Kach Party
Meir Kahane founded both the militant group, the Jewish Defense League (JDL), in the USA and the Israeli Kach ("This is the Way") Party. In 1984 he became a member of the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) when he obtained a seat in parliamentary elections. However, in 1988, the Israeli government banned him as "racist" and "anti-democratic" under the terms of an ad hoc law
4 .
The Israeli Parliament, located in Jerusalem, and comprised of 120 freely-elected members of parliament through proportional representation (coming from mainstream, minority and independent political affiliations), is called ...
The Forum
The Knesset
Yisrael Beiteinu
The Dáil
This is the judicial division of the Israeli government and passes all laws, elects the president and prime minister (although the prime minister usually is ceremonially appointed by the President), approves the cabinet membership and administers the work of the government through its committees. It also has the power, if necessary, to relinquish the immunity of its members, remove the President and the State Comptroller from office, to dissolve itself and to call new elections
5 .
Which of the following is not true?
Israel has one of the highest rates of per capita patents (to ‘copyright’ new products) filed each year
In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of start-up companies in the world
According to industry officials, Israel has designed the airline industry’s most impenetrable flight security
Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net loss in its number of trees
Israel is actually the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net GAIN in its number of trees, a fact made all the more remarkable because this was achieved in an arid country considered to be mainly desert
6 .
How long is the term of the Israeli President?
4 years
7 years
10 years
Until he/she dies or retires
Although elected by an absolute (or simple vote, should no candidate receive a majority after three rounds) majority in the Knesset (Israel parliament) following a secret ballot, the presidency is very much an apolitical ceremonial figurehead role. The presidential office falls vacant following completion of a term, a resignation, or the decision by three-quarters of the Knesset to remove the president on grounds of misconduct or incapacity. It is not dependent on political control, or affected by change of government, and there is no vice president, the Speaker of the House in parliament taking the role of acting president should the need arises
7 .
People commonly perceive Israel to be a much larger country than it really is. As a result, they fail to understand how difficult it is for Israel to withdraw from land it holds, but also, given its small size compared to the size of those nations surrounding it, how impractical this would actually be. Israel would fit comfortably in ....
England (excluding Scotland and Wales)
California
Lake Michigan
All three
The area of Israel is just 27,000 km² (England is 130,395 km²) which includes 445 km² of inland water, 424 km (the distance from York to Southampton) from north to south and a width ranging from 114 km (the distance from Halifax to Hull) to 15 km at its narrowest point. It would actually be dwarfed by being placed in the state California, its length fitting in that state’s width, and it comfortably fits in Lake Michigan or England
8 .
The IDF – the Israeli Defence Forces – differs from most armed forces in that ....
all Israeli citizens, including women, must serve their time
no soldier serves for more than 1 year
women are not permitted to join the Forces
all branches of the IDF ‘close down’ for the Sabbath Day
The mandatory conscription of women, and a structure that sees very close relations between the army, navy, and air force, where the same rank names are used for all corps, including the air force, and navy, are the most marked differences
9 .
Non-Jewish religions in Israel ....
are expected to raise their own funds
receive funding from the Israeli government
must seek financial help from abroad
are not tolerated
Non-Jewish religions, particularly Christianity and Islam, are fully recognised by Israel and receive funding from the Israeli government. The Christian community makes up some 2.1 percent of the Israeli population, while the Muslim community makes up approximately 15 percent of the population. Israeli law allows for total and unhindered freedom of religious expression and these - and other - communities can worship freely and are protected by Human Rights, with repression of minority religions punishable under Israeli Law
10 .
