Teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that the greatest jihad is to struggle with the insidious suggestions of one’s own soul. Thus jihad primarily refers to the inner struggle of being a person of virtue and submission to God in all aspects of life.

"Ayshah, wife of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, we see Jihad as the best of deeds, so shouldn't we join it?' He replied, 'But the best of Jihad is a perfect Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).'" [Sahih Al-Bukhari #2784]

At another occasion, a man asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "'Should I join the war and do Jihad?' He asked, 'Do you have parents?' The man said, 'Yes!' The Prophet (PBUH) said, 'Then strive by serving them!'" [Sahih Al-Bukhari #5972]

Yet another man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "'What kind of jihad is better?' He replied, 'A word of truth in front of an oppressive ruler!'" [Sunan Al-Nasa'i #4209]

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “I and the person who looks after an orphan and provides for him will be like this” putting his index finger and middle finger together. (Sahih Bukhari Volumne 8, Hadith 6005)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said “Be merciful on the earth and you will be shown mercy from the One who is above the Heavens”

Prophet Muhammad never hurt anyone during his lifetime and always smiled at children and showed kindness. Orphans always enjoyed a special place in the heart of the Prophet

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “None of you will have faith until he likes for his brother what he likes for himself (Sahih Bukkhari, Volume 1, Hadith 13)
Allah helps the servant as long as he helps his brother (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2699)
The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter paradise (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Hadith 5984)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in his last sermon on his Hajj, “There is truly no excellence for an Arab over a non-Arab; or for a non-Arab over an Arab; or for a white man over a black man; or for a black man over a white man; except through piety.” Worship Allah, offer your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to. You know that every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim. You are all equal. Nobody has superiority over other except by piety and good action.

The Prophet also mentioned that a husband has rights over his wife and similarly the wife has rights over the husband, and that the wife should be treated with kindness. Regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “This world is but provisions, and there is no provision in this world better than a righteous wife” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Volumne 3, Hadith 1855)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) mentioned that “The strong is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger (Sahih Bukhari Book 8, Volume 73, Hadith 135) (Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Hadith 6314)

A person asked Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) “Advise me!” The Prophet said, “Do not become angry or furious”. The man asked the same again and again and each time the Prophet said, “Do not become angry or furious”. (Sahih Bukhari Volume 8, Hadith 6116)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “whoever helps in a dispute unjustly, he draws upon himself the wrath of Allah” (Sunan Abu Dawud, Volume 4, Hadith – 3598)

He who believes in Allah and the Last Day should do good to his neighbour (Sahih Muslim Book-1, Hadith – 78)
One will not enter paradise whose neighbour is not secure from his wrongful conduct. (Sahih Muslim Book-1, Hadith – 74)
He who believes in Allah and the Last Day does not harm his neighbour (Sahih Muslim Book-1, Hadith – 76)

The first article of the constitution laid down by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the inhabitants of Madinah, the Muslims as well as those who had entered the pact from the Jews, Christian, and idolaters, were “one nation to the exclusion of all others". All were considered members and citizens of Medina society regardless of religion, race, or ancestry.

People of other faiths were protected from harm as much as the Muslims, as is stated in another article, “To the Jews who follow us belong help and equity. He shall not be harmed nor his enemies be aided.”

The lives of the practitioners of other religions in Muslim society was also given protective status. The Prophet said: “Whoever kills a person who has a truce with Muslims will never smell the fragrance of paradise.” (Saheeh Muslim)
