Obadiah
God speaks of the Edomites' pride, saying that they think of themselves as an eagle.

Obadiah

This quiz, Obadiah, includes the race of Edomites.

The fourth Book of the Minor Prophets, and the thirty-first of the Bible, is the Book of Obadiah. It is the shortest book in the whole of the Old Testament, containing only one chapter and twenty-one verses. The book gives us an example of how God will punish the enemies of Judah. It is a warning to one nation to the south of Judah which did not come to the Israelites' aid when they were in danger, but rather they looted and gloated over Judah and its people. God will punish this nation and Obadiah tells them of their coming judgement.

All quotations from the Bible are taken from the Authorised King James Version.
1 .
Obadiah's vision of God's judgement falls on one nation in particular. Which nation is this?
Egypt
Philistia
Moab
Edom
The nation concerned is Edom. The Edomites were distantly related to the Israelites and so they were expected to help them, rather than to be their enemies.

Obadiah 1:1
"The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord God concerning Edom;
We have heard a rumour from the Lord,
and an ambassador is sent among the heathen,
Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle"
2 .
God speaks of the Edomites' pride, saying that they think of themselves as an eagle and make their nest where?
In the tallest tree
Amongst the stars
On the tallest mountain
Amongst the clouds
The Edomites did actually live in the mountains, and their nest amongst the stars may be a reference to their high dwelling, as well as to their pride.

Obadiah 1:4
"Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle,
and though thou set thy nest among the stars,
thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord"
3 .
The Edomites and the Israelites were related because they were both descended from who?
From Isaac
From Jacob
From Benjamin
From Joseph
Isaac had twin sons, Esau and Jacob. The Israelites were descended from Jacob and the Edomites from Esau. The capital city of Edom was named Mount Esau after him.

Obadiah 1:8
"Shall I not in that day, saith the Lord,
even destroy the wise men out of Edom,
and understanding out of the mount of Esau?"
4 .
Another town in Edom is named by Obadiah when he says that its men shall be dismayed. Which town is this?
Petra
Mafraq
Teman
Ma'an
Teman was named after a grandson of Esau, the son of his eldest son, Eliphaz.

Obadiah 1:9
"And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed,
to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter"
5 .
Because of the Edomites' failure to help the people of Jerusalem in their hour of need God says that they shall be covered with what?
With shame
With dust
With sadness
With fire
The Edomites' failure to help made them as bad as the actual perpetrators of Jerusalem's fall.

Obadiah 1:10-11
"For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee,
and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
In the day that thou stoodest on the other side,
in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces,
and foreigners entered into his gates,
and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them"
6 .
God condemns the Edomites for gloating, for entering Jerusalem, for looting and for capturing survivors of the disaster and doing what to them?
Taking them home for slaves
Killing them
Handing them over to the enemy
Selling them to the Egyptians as slaves
The Edomites had cut off the escape route of those fleeing the city. The people they captured were handed over to their enemies.

Obadiah 1:12-14
"But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother
in the day that he became a stranger;
neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah
in the day of their destruction;
neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people
in the day of their calamity;
yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction
in the day of their calamity,
nor have laid hands on their substance
in the day of their calamity;
neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway,
to cut off those of his that did escape;
neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress"
7 .
God promises to punish the Edomites, particularly as they partook of drink where?
In the palace of Judah's enemy
On God's Holy Mountain
In the palace of King David
On the walls of Jerusalem
The drink referred to is the drink of punishment. God says that Edom's neighbours will also drink His punishment and they will be destroyed.

Obadiah 1:15-16
"For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen:
as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee:
thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain,
so shall all the heathen drink continually,
yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down,
and they shall be as though they had not been"
8 .
Speaking of Edom's coming judgement, God says that they will be like stubble, destroyed by the what of Jacob and Joseph?
Tweezers and balm
Sickle and scythe
Razor and blade
Fire and flame
God is talking of a time when Edom will be taken by Judah and its people will be destroyed, as a farmer burns the stubble in his field.

Obadiah 1:17-18
"But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance,
and there shall be holiness;
and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
And the house of Jacob shall be a fire,
and the house of Joseph a flame,
and the house of Esau for stubble,
and they shall kindle in them, and devour them;
and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau;
for the Lord hath spoken it"
9 .

Those who live in the south of Judea
The people of Benjamin
Those who live in the lowlands of Judea
The people of Levi
God says that the Israelites shall take control of Edom, Philistia, Ephraim, Samaria, Gilead and parts of Phoenicia.

Obadiah 1:19-20
"And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead. And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south"
10 .
The last verse of Obadiah tells of when Jerusalem has been saved and the Edomites will be judged. To whom shall the Kingdom of Edom then belong?
To God
To the descendants of King David
To the Kings of Judah

"And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s"
