Exodus

Crossing the Red Sea.

Exodus

The Book of Exodus is the second in the Bible and it tells the story of deliverance. Centuries had passed since Joseph's time and the Jews had multiplied in Egypt. The Egyptian Pharaohs had forgotten their gratitude to Joseph and had made slaves of the Jews. Exodus tells us how God delivered His people from bondage and instructed them on how they should serve Him.

All quotations from the Bible are taken from the Authorised King James Version.
1 .
The Pharaoh of Egypt gave an order that all the Jewish babies who were boys were to be killed. The mother of one child put him in an ark made from bulrushes and placed this in the river, hoping that her son would be saved. The child was discovered and adopted by who?
By Pharaoh himself
By the Edomites
By Pharaoh's daughter
By the Canaanites
Pharaoh's daughter had one of her servants look after the child at first.

Exodus 2:9-10
"And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water."

In Hebrew the word 'Moses' means 'the one who was drawn out'
2 .
When Moses had grown up he saw how an Egyptian was mistreating a Hebrew slave. Moses killed the Egyptian, then fearing Pharaoh's judgement on him, he fled to where?
The land of Midian
The land of Canaan
The land of Sinai
The land of Judah
Exodus 2:13-15
"And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well."

Moses lived in Midian as a shepherd for 40 years. Whilst there he married Zipporah who bore him a son, Gershom
3 .
One day, whilst he was leading his flocks on a mountainside, Moses was spoken to by God. God spoke to Moses from within what?
A bolt of lightning
A burning bush
A thunder cloud
A column of smoke
Exodus 3:2-6
"And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God."

God spoke to Moses and commanded him to return to Egypt to free the Israelites. Moses felt that he was not up to the task but after God performed miracles for him, Moses did as he was told
4 .
To persuade Pharaoh to let the Israelites go free, God sent 10 plagues to his land: one of blood, one of frogs, one of lice, one of flies, one of pestilence, one of boils, one of hail, one of locusts and one of darkness. What was the 10th and final plague?
Plague of leprosy
Slaying of daughters
Plague of rats
Slaying of the firstborn
Exodus 11:4-6
"And Moses said, Thus saith the Lord, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt: and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts. And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more."

The Israelites were spared from the plague and God passed over their houses. It is from this event that the Jewish festival of 'Passover' derives
5 .
After the plagues Pharaoh agreed to let the Israelites go, but he changed his mind and went after them with his armies. All seemed lost until God performed what miracle?
God raised a mountain
God hid the Israelites
God parted the sea
God blinded the Egyptians
God parted the sea so that the Israelites could walk through and escape. When the Egyptians tried to follow God brought the waters down on them.

Exodus 14:28-30
"And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore"
6 .
Two and a half months after they had escaped from Egypt, the Israelites began to murmur against Moses because they had nothing to eat. To save them God provided what food?
Antelope
Corn
Goat
Manna
Exodus 16:14-15
"And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground. And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat."

Nobody knows exactly what manna was but we do know that it saved the Israelites from starvation
7 .
As the leader of the Israelites Moses was tasked with judging their arguments. But the number of people who came to Moses with their grievances meant that he had no time to rest from the morning until the evening. At last, Moses decided to delegate some of his work to others after being advised by whom?
Jethro, his father-in-law
Zipporah, his wife
Aaron, his brother
Gershom, his son
Moses appointed men to be judges in the smaller arguments between the Israelites, whilst he himself took the most serious of cases.

Exodus 18:24-26
"So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said. And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves"
8 .
God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai and gave him how many commandments?
5 commandments
10 commandments
15 commandments
20 commandments
Here are the 10 commandments which God gave to Moses:

Exodus 20:2-17
"I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s"
9 .
While Moses was on the mountain, the Israelites broke God's commandments and made for themselves an idol. What kind of idol did they make?
A silver bull
A golden goat
A silver ram
A golden calf
Exodus 32:3-4
"And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt."

God was going to destroy the people for their sin but Moses pleaded for His mercy. The Israelites repented and God renewed His covenant with them
10 .
The 10 commandments were inscribed on tablets of stone and placed inside the Ark of the Covenant. This was placed in the Holy of Holies, the inner shrine of a structure built to God's specifications as a place for his presence to dwell. What was this structure designed by God known as?
The Temple
The Tabernacle
The Synagogue
The Church
The Tabernacle was portable and the Israelites carried it with them on their wanderings in the wilderness and when they came to the promised land.

Exodus 40:33-38
"And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work. Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys: but if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up. For the cloud of the Lord was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys"
