Birds range in size from the 5 cm (2 in) bee hummingbird to the 2.75 m (9 ft) ostrich. The fossil record indicates birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs during the Jurassic period, around 160 million years ago. All living species of birds have wings - the now extinct flightless moa of New Zealand was the only exception.
The picture to the right, of the Northern Gannet, is from the wonderful wildlife portfolio of Alan and Elaine Wilson. We cannot recommend strongly enough that you visit their website at Nature's Pics where you will find some of the most breathtaking images you can imagine.
