Genre - Novels 1

A novel is a long and usually fictional narrative, more often than not in the form of a sequential story – although there are many exceptions to this rule of thumb! Novels are descended from the medieval romances (the Germans and the French call a novel a “roman” and the Italians a "romanzo") but, rather than describing fantastical events they (usually!) depict a more realistic and everyday set of characters and scenarios. As you can see, the “genre” covers a very wide spectrum!

This is the first in our series of four quizzes on novels. In all of them we have endeavoured to cater for a wide range of tastes! Here you will find questions about Richard Adams’ relatively gentle Watership Down alongside others from the not-so-gentle Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth, and marvellous fantasies such as the Discworld series alongside “Whodunits” featuring Miss Marple. Enjoy!
