People have been writing down accounts of their lives since time immemorial and we have memoirs by such people as Julius Caesar, Flavius Josephus and Saint Augustine of Hippo. One of the first great autobiographies was written by the sculptor Benvenuto Cellini in the 16th Century. In it he writes:
"Everyone who has to his credit what are or really seem great achievements, if he cares for truth and goodness, ought to write the story of his own life in his own hand."
