Vocabulary - A Smorgasbord of Words! (Part 2)

This Spanish Medium Review quiz will continue to challenge you on being able to quickly draw upon your Spanish vocabulary bank of words. To begin with, it is the second of four smorgasbord of words quizzes. In the Spanish Medium Review quiz titled Vocabulary: A Smorgasbord of Words! (Part 1), you learned that smorgasbord means a varied collection or, in other words, a collection of many things that can be related or unrelated. This series of quizzes has been designed to help challenge you to draw upon all of the many different Spanish vocabulary words you have learned thus far in both the Spanish Easy Review quiz series and the Spanish Medium Review quiz series.

1 .
Peter was stung by a JELLYFISH.
anguila
langosta
medusa
pulpo
The first answer means eel. The second answer means lobster. The last answer means octopus and the third answer means jellyfish. The Spanish word for jellyfish is medusa.
2 .
David gave Susan a rose bud.
Davíd sabe Susan un capullo de rosa.
Davíd ayuda a Susan un capullo de rosa.
Davíd trasladó a Susan un capullo de rosa.
Davíd dio a Susan un capullo de rosa.
To find the correct answer here you will need to know the past tense form of the verb 'to give', i.e., gave. You also need to find the pronoun that can replace David. That would be he. The Spanish past tense verb for 'he gave' is dio. This means that the correct translation is: Davíd dio a Susan un capullo de rosa. It literally translates as: David gave to Susan a bud of rose.
3 .
She put her coat in the closet.
Él puso su abrigo en la despensa.
Ella puso su abrigo en el armario.
Él puso su abrigo en el armario.
Ella puso su abrigo en la despensa.
The first thing to look at here is the pronoun she. In Spanish that is ella. The first and third answers can be eliminated as él means he. 'Puso su abrigo en' is translated in each answer meaning 'put her coat in'. The next thing you need to know is the Spanish word for closet. That word is armario and since it is a masculine word, the article the is also masculine giving you el. The correct Spanish translation is then: Ella puso su abrigo en el armario.
4 .
The boys have SOME time to kill.
unas
un
el
unos
The word 'some' is an indefinite article so you know that you will not be using the definite article of 'the' which now means that the third answer can be eliminated. Now you need to know the Spanish word for time and that is tiempo which is a masculine word. Notice that 'some' means more than one so you now know that the indefinite article must be plural which means you can now eliminate the second answer as it shows the singular indefinite article. Again, as tiempo is masculine, you can also eliminate the first answer as it is feminine. The Spanish word for 'some' is then unos.
5 .
El doctor está en la llamada.
The doctor is on call.
The doctor has a name.
The doctor is in the room.
The doctor is in love.
The verb in this sentence is está which means is. The second answer can now be eliminated as it shows the incorrect translation of the verb. Next you need to know what 'en la llamada' means. In Spanish this means, 'on call'. The correct English translation of the given sentence is: The doctor is on call.
6 .
Bernie has TWENTY-FOUR marbles and Ralph has FORTY-ONE.
veinte y cinco, cincuenta y uno
sesenta y cinco
veinte y cuatro, cuarenta y uno
viente y cuarto, cuarenta y uno
The two numbers capitalized in the sentence are 24 and 41. The first answer shows 25 and 51. That is not correct. The second answer has added the two numbers together to get 65 but there is no instruction to add the numbers together. The last answer has misspelled the word for 20 which should be veinte. In addition, the number four is spelled cuatro. The last answer is showing the word for room (cuarto). Cuarto can also mean 'quarter' or 'fourth'. The correct translation is: veinte y cuatro, cuarenta y uno.
7 .
Daddy got a LOAN for the new car.
salva
préstamo
cambio
dinero
The Spanish word for loan is préstamo.
8 .
¿Qué hora es?
Who is she?
Where is he?
What is happening?
What time is it?
The English translation of this sentence is: What time is it?
9 .

To find the correct answer you must know the Spanish word for classroom. That word is aula.
