Grammar - The Indirect Object Pronoun - Spanish to English

This Spanish Medium Review quiz will once again revisit the indirect object pronoun and how they work. Being able to understand how to use the indirect object pronoun in Spanish can be tricky and will take some time before you can really get a good grasp on. In the sister quiz to this quiz titled The Indirect Object Pronoun you were given a really good and detailed description of the understanding of how the indirect object pronoun is used and where it is placed in the Spanish sentence. That quiz also allowed you to look at an indirect object pronoun as it is used in a sentence written in English and then you were asked to find the Spanish indirect object pronoun that would replace the English.

1 .
Davíd le dio un coche nuevo.
it
them
us
her
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is le. Le does not mean it, them or us so the first, second and third answers can be eliminated. This sentence translates as: David gave her a new car. (The literal translation is, David to her gave a car new.) Here, le replaced the pronoun her and since her is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
2 .
Madre les lee libros en la noche.
our
us
them
their
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is les. The first and last answers are possessive pronouns. We are not looking for possessive pronouns in this quiz. Les does not mean us so the second answer can be eliminated. This sentence translates as: Mother read books to them at night. (The literal translation is: Mother to them reads books in the night.) Here, les replaced the pronoun of them and since them is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
3 .
Mandy nos dijo las palabras.
us
our
your
him
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is nos. The second and third answers are possessive pronouns. We are not looking for possessive pronouns in this quiz. Nos does not mean him so the last answer can be eliminated. This sentence translates as: Mandy told us the words. (The literal translation is: Mandy to us old the words.) Here, nos replaced the pronoun for us and since us is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
4 .
Mi tía me da camisas.
her
me
you (familiar singular)
you (formal singular)
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is me. Me does not mean her, you familiar singular) or you (formal singular) so the first, third and last answers can be eliminated. This sentence translates as: My aunt gives me shirts. (The literal translation is: My aunt to me gives shirts.) Here, me replaced the pronoun of me (that’s easy enough) and since me is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
5 .
Pedro te arroja una pelota.
you (formal singular)
him
you (familiar singular)
them
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is te. Te does not mean him or them so the second and last answers can be eliminated. Te means you (familiar singular) so the first answer you (formal singular) must also be eliminated. This sentence translates as: Peter throws you a ball. (The literal translation is: Peter throws to you a ball.) Here, te replaced the pronoun you and since you is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
6 .
El profesor se lo envía.
your
me
his
him
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is se. The first and third answers are possessive pronouns. We are not looking for possessive pronouns in this quiz. Se does not mean me so the second answer can also be eliminated. This sentence translates as: The teacher sends it to him. (The literal translation is: The teacher to him sends it.) The indirect object pronoun for him is le. However, when the direct object pronoun begins with an L as in 'lo le', it becomes se.
7 .
Él entrega le flores.
her
hers
your
them
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is le. The second, third and last answers are each possessive pronouns. We are not looking for possessive pronouns in this quiz. That leaves you with the first answer her. This sentence translates as: He delivers flowers to her. (The literal translation is: He delivers to her flowers.) Here, le is used after the verb. This is a circumstance where the indirect object pronoun can be used after the verb.
8 .
Les presentan con dinero.
us
me
them
you (familiar plural)
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is les. Les does not mean us or me so the first and second answers can be eliminated. Les means you (formal plural) so the last answer you (familiar plural) must also be eliminated. This sentence translates as: They present them with money. (The literal translation is: To them they present money.) Here, les replaced the pronoun for them and since them is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
9 .
El abogado os habló.
you (formal plural)
you (familiar plural)
us
their
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is os. The last answer is a possessive pronoun and is not what we are looking for here so it can be eliminated. Os does not mean us so it, too, can be eliminated. Os means you (familiar plural) so the first answer you (formal plural) needs to be eliminated. This sentence translates as: The lawyer talked to you. (The literal translation is: The lawyer to you talked.) Here, os replaced the pronoun for you and since you is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
10 .
Nos anunció la noticia.
them
her
him
us
The indirect object pronoun in this sentence is nos. Nos does not mean them, her or him so the first, second and third answers can be eliminated. Nos means us. This sentence translates as: He announced to us the news. (The literal translation is: To us he announced the news.) Here, nos replaced the pronoun for us and since us is the indirect object pronoun as it is being acted upon and is not doing the action, it comes before the verb.
