Vocabulary - Things I LIKE To Do!
Emily and Sarah like cats. How does this translate from English to Spanish?

Vocabulary - Things I LIKE To Do!

By now you should have amassed a pretty large Spanish vocabulary bank to draw upon. Because of this large bank, you are now getting to the point where you can start putting those words together to make simple sentences. This Spanish Easy Review vocabulary quiz is, therefore, set up to help you to start putting words together by using just one verb, gustar. Gustar is a regular ar verb and means to like. You will need to remember how to conjugate gustar in the present tense. In addition, you will need to remember many different vocabulary words.

Below there are ten sentences that contain the verb 'to like' along with what item is liked. From the answers given, see if you can locate the correct Spanish translation of the given sentence.

1 .
We like candy.
Nosotros gustamos dulce.
Vosotros gustáis chocolate.
Nosotras gustamos dulce.
Vosotras gustáis cacahuate.
The first thing to determine is the correct pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for we is nosotros (masculine) or nosotras (feminine). This means that the second and last answers can be eliminated. As you do not know whether 'we' is for all boys, all girls or both, you always use the masculine pronoun. This tells you that the third answer can be eliminated. The first answer has the correct pronoun, the correct conjugated verb for 'we like' and the correct word for candy.
2 .
I like chocolate milk.
Gusta chocolate leche.
Gustas leche de chocolate.
Gusto leche de chocolate.
Gusto chocolate leche.
The first thing to determine is the conjugated verb that means 'I like'. The first answer is conjugated to mean 'you/he/she' likes so it is not correct. The second answer is conjugated to mean 'you' familiar like and it too is not the correct conjugated verb. The first and last answers do not show the sentence in the correct order. In Spanish, the adjective always comes after the noun it is describing which is opposite of how it is done in English. The third answer shows the correct conjugated verb for 'I like' as well as the correct order of chocolate milk which translates as 'milk of chocolate'.
3 .
William likes September.
William gusta septiembre.
Guillermo gustan septembre.
William gustas septembre.
Guillermo gusta septiembre.
The first thing you need to determine is which pronoun would go with William. As William is male, the pronoun would be he. Now you need to locate the correct conjugated verb that indicates 'he likes'. The second answer is 'you' plural, formal or 'they' like so it is not correct. The third answer is 'you' singular, familiar and it, too, is not correct. The first and second answers failed to translate William into Spanish which is Guillermo. In addition, the second and third answers have misspelled September which is septiembre. The last answer has correctly translated William, has the correct conjugated verb for 'he likes' and the correct spelling for September. It correctly reads, 'William likes September.'
4 .
Emily and Sarah like cats.
Emilia y Sarah gustamos gatos.
Emilia y Sara gustan gatos.
Emilia y Sarah gustan gatos.
Emilia y Sara gustamos gatos.
The first thing to do is to determine which pronoun would replace Emily and Sarah. That pronoun would be they (ellas). Now you need to locate the correct conjugated verb that means 'they like'. The first and last answers mean 'we like' so they are not correct. The first and third answers have not translated Sarah correctly. In Spanish, Sarah is Sara. The second answer has the correct translation for both Emily and Sarah, shows the correct conjugated form for 'they like' and the correct word for cats.
5 .
John likes my sister.
Juan gusto mi hermana.
Juan gusta mi hermana.
Juan gusta hermana.
John gusta hermana.
The first thing to determine is the pronoun that would replace John. That would be the pronoun he. Therefore, you need to find the conjugated verb form for he. This eliminates the first answer which is the conjugated form for the pronoun 'I'. The last answer has failed to translate John to Juan so it is not a correct translation of the sentence. The third and last answers also failed to include a translation for 'my' which is 'mi'. The second answer shows the correct translation for John, the correct conjugation of the verb 'he likes', the correct translation for 'my' and the correct word/translation for sister.
6 .
You like pudding. ('You' refers to grandma.)
Tú gustas pudín.
Usted gusta pudín.
Ella gusta pudin.
Tú gustas pudin.
The first thing to do is to determine the pronoun for 'you' when it refers to grandma. As grandma is singular and familiar, the singular, familiar Spanish pronoun for you is tú. Now you can eliminate the second and third answers. The first and last answers show the correct pronoun and the correct conjugated form for 'you' singular, familiar, however, the correct Spanish word and spelling for pudding is pudín. Note that the accent mark is needed.
7 .
You like animals. ('You' refers to sisters.)
Ustedes gustan animals.
Vosotras gustáis anemals.
Vosotras gustáis animales.
Ustedes gustan anemals.
The first thing to determine is the correct pronoun for 'you'. Here 'you' stands for sisters which are familiar and plural, as well as feminine. The plural, familiar, feminine pronoun for 'you' is vosotras. You can then eliminate the first and last answers. The second and third answers show the correct pronoun and the correct conjugated form for 'you like'. However, the second answer has translated the word for animal incorrectly. Animal is spelled the same in Spanish as it is in English although it is pronounced differently, i.e. it is phonetically pronounced as ăn-ē-măl. The third answer shows the correct pronoun, conjugated verb form and spelling for animales. Did you remember the rule about making words plural that end in a consonant? If a word ends in a consonant you add the letters es.
8 .
I like peanuts.
Yo gusto palomitas.
Yo gusto cacahuates.
Yo gusto glaseados.
Yo gusto galletas.
In this case each answer shows the correct conjugated form for 'I like' so the correct translation is based on the word for peanuts. The first answer is popcorn. The third answer is frosting and the last answer is cookies.
9 .
They like pancakes.
Ellos gustan panqueque.
Ellas gustan panqueques.
Ustedes gustan panqueques.
Ellos gustan panqueques.
The first thing to determine is the correct Spanish pronoun for 'they'. As you do not know whether 'they' refers to all boys, all girls or both, you use the masculine form of the pronoun. The masculine pronoun for 'they' is ellos. This now means that the second and third answers can be eliminated. The first and last answers show the correct pronoun and the correct conjugation of the verb 'they like', however, the word to look at is pancakes which is plural. The first answer has translated this as a single pancake so it is not correct.
10 .
I like white chicken.
Gusto pollo de blanco.
Gusto pavo de blanco.
Gusto pollo de blanca.
Gusto pavo de blanca.
Each answer here shows the correct conjugation for the verb 'I like'. In addition, each answer shows the correct order of words. However, the correct Spanish word for chicken is pollo which means that the second and last answers can be eliminated because they contain the word for turkey. The word pollo is a masculine word so the adjective describing it needs to be masculine as well. The third answer shows a feminine adjective for white so it is not correct.
