Grammar - Conjugating ER Verbs - Present Tense (2)

This Spanish Easy Review grammar quiz is part 2 of conjugating ER verbs. If you have not already done so, now would be the time to check out the Spanish Easy Review Conjugating AR Verbs - Present Tense (1), Conjugating AR Verbs - Present Tense (2) and Conjugating ER Verbs - Present Tense (1) quizzes as they will explain and show you what conjugating a verb is and how it is done. As a reminder, the ER present tense regular verb endings are: o, es, e, emos, éis, en.

1 .
they believe (women)
ustedes creen
ellas creen
nosotras creemos
ellos creen
The first step is to determine the correct pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for 'they' when they are all women (i.e., feminine) is 'ellas'. This means you can eliminate the first, third and last answers. The second answer does show the correct pronoun, gender and present tense form of the verb for 'they believe'.
2 .
you promise (sons)
ellos prometen
ustedes prometen
vosotros prometéis
nosotros prometemos
First determine which pronoun should be used. Here we have the pronoun of 'you' and that 'you' refers to sons. As there is more than one son we know we need to use a plural form of the pronoun. In addition, as the word sons refers to people who are familiar, we need to use the plural, familiar form of the pronoun 'you'. As the word sons refers to males, we also need the masculine form of the pronoun. The plural, familiar, masculine Spanish pronoun for 'you' is 'vosotros'. This then gives you the translation of 'vosotros prometéis'.
3 .
you lick (customer)
usted lame
tú lames
él lame
ella lame
The first thing to look at is the pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for 'you' when it refers to a customer would be singular and formal as opposed to familiar. The singular, formal version of 'you' is 'usted'. This means that the second, third and last answers are not correct translations. The correct pronoun and present tense form translation would be 'usted lame'.
4 .
we understand (students)
nosotras comprendamos
nosotros comprendamos
nosotras comprendemos
nosotros comprendemos
The first task to address here is to determine which Spanish pronoun should be used. As the pronoun 'we' is shown and the hint of 'students' is given. We do not know, however, if 'we' is for all boys, all girls or both. Whenever you do not know, you should always use the masculine form. Therefore, the plural, masculine form of the Spanish pronoun of 'we' is 'nosotros'. You can now eliminate any feminine pronouns. Also note that with the first and second answer, the improper verb endings have been added. These verb endings would be for 'ar' verbs and not 'er' verbs. Always pay attention to the verb endings to make certain they are the correct endings. As we can now eliminate the first and second for having the wrong verb endings and the third answer for the wrong gender form, that leaves us with the last answer which is translated into Spanish as: 'nosostros comprendemos'.
5 .
I sweep
ellas barren
ella barre
yo barro
usted barre
The quickest way to find the answer is to determine the right Spanish pronoun form for 'I'. That would be the pronoun 'yo'. Now you can quickly eliminate the first, second and last answers. The correct pronoun and present tense form of the given verb is: 'yo barro'.
6 .
they absorb (friends)
ellos absorben
nosotras absorbemos
ustedes absorben
ellas absorben
The first step is to determine the correct pronoun. The pronoun shown is 'they' which refers to friends and as there is more than one friend, we know the pronoun needs to be plural. As we do not know if the friends are all boys, all girls or both, we use the masculine form of the pronoun. The plural, masculine Spanish pronoun for 'they' is 'ellos'. This means you can eliminate the second, third and last answers. The correct pronoun and present tense form of the given verb is: 'ellos absorben' .
7 .
you catch (daughter)
usted coge
tú coges
ella coge
él coge
The first thing to do is to check out the pronoun. The pronoun for 'you' when 'you' is a daughter means that the person is a feminine, familiar person. The Spanish pronoun for a familiar 'you' person is 'tú'. This means that the first, third and last answers are each incorrect. The correct pronoun and present tense form of the given verb is: 'tú coges'.
8 .
she drinks
usted bebe
él bebe
yo bebo
ella bebe
First determine what the pronoun should be. It is clearly shown to be 'she'. The Spanish pronoun for 'she' is 'ella'. This means that the first, second and third answers are each incorrect. The correct present tense form of the given verb is: 'ella bebe'.
9 .
he learns
él aprenda
ellos aprenden
él aprende
tú aprende
The first thing to look at is the pronoun. The pronoun given is the word 'he'. In Spanish, 'he' is 'él'. This tells us that the second and last answers are incorrect. The first answer has the wrong verb tense ending for an 'er' verb so it, too, is not correct. The correct conjugated present tense form of the given verb is: 'él aprende'.
10 .
you fit (cub scouts)
ustedes caben
usted cabe
tú cabes
vosotros cabéis
The first thing to look at is the pronoun. The Spanish pronoun for 'you' when it refers to cub scouts would be plural and formal as opposed to familiar. Cub scouts is also all boys. The plural formal version of 'you' is 'ustedes'. This means that the second, third and last answers are not correct. The correct pronoun and present tense form of the give verb is: 'ustedes caben'.
