Comprehension - I Can Read Spanish! (Quiz 5)

You are almost to the end of the Comprehension: I Can Read Spanish! quiz series. This fifth Spanish Easy Review comprehension quiz continues to help you review your ability to be able to read Spanish. Hopefully you have been enjoying the quizzes and coming to realize just how much Spanish you now actually know. Try not to get too frustrated if you do not do very well at the beginning of the series or with any quiz.

Learning a new language takes some time and people learn at different levels and speeds. The great thing about learning Spanish here or using the quizzes to complement your other Spanish classes is that you can move through the quizzes at your own pace and you can revisit any quiz at any time to help refresh areas you are not as familiar with or as comfortable with.

Ayudo a los niños a leer.
I help children to read.
I help the boys to read.
I help the girls to read.
I help the nephews to read.
The verb ayudo is Spanish for I help. Each answer has this translated correctly. The word a is Spanish for to. Again, each answer has this translated correctly. The verb leer is Spanish for to read. Once again, each answer has translated this correctly. This leaves los niños which is Spanish for children (includes either all males or a combination of males and females).

Nosotros nadamos en el océano.
We navigate on the ocean.
We swim in the ocean.
We swam in the ocean.
We will swim in the ocean.
At this point you have only learned to conjugate verbs in the present tense. The third answer shows the past tense and the last answer shows the future tense. Therefore, neither the third nor the last answers are correct. The verb nadamos is Spanish for we swim. This now tells you that the first answer is also not correct. The correct translation is: We swim in the ocean.

Carmina en la recámara.
Duerme en el armario.
Duerme en la recámara.
Carmina en el armario.
The Spanish verb for he sleeps is duerme. This means that the first and last answers can be eliminated. The Spanish word for bedroom is recámara. This then tells you that the third answer is the correct translation.

Madre pule la estufa.
The Spanish word for mother is madre. Each answer has translated this correctly. The stove in Spanish is la estufa. Again, each answer has translated this correctly. The verb polishes in Spanish is pule. This then tells you that the correct translation is: Madre pule la estufa.

The sun burns my head.
The soul is in my head.
The soul enters my head.
The sun hurts my head.
The words mi cabeza are Spanish for my head. Each answer has translated this correctly. The words el sol are Spanish for the sun which means that the second and third answers can now be eliminated. The verb arde is Spanish for burns. This now tells you that the correct translation is: The sun burns my head.

Jonathan wants to be in New York.

Jonathan is a name that is spoken and spelled the same in both English and Spanish. The words en Nueva York is Spanish for in New York. Each answer has translated this correctly. The verb trabaja is Spanish for works. This now tells you that the correct translation is: Jonathan works in New York.

Ellas cogen pez en el norte.
They eat popsicles in the north.
They catch cold in the north.
They catch fish in the north.
They make pizza in the north.
The words en el norte are Spanish for in the north. Each answer has translated these words correctly. The word ellas is the Spanish pronoun for they. In this case, it is the feminine form and refers to all girls. Each answer has translated this correctly. The verb cogen is Spanish for catch. This means that you can now eliminate the first and last answers. Finally, the word pez is Spanish for fish. This now tells you that the correct translation is: They catch fish in the north.

The word él is the Spanish pronoun for he. Each answer has translated this correctly. The Spanish word for brother is hermano. This means that you can now eliminate the third answer as it says sister. The Spanish word for with is con. Now you can also eliminate the first answer as this is not included in its translation. The word his is the possessive adjective and in Spanish is su. Each answer has translated this correctly. The verb fights in Spanish is combate. This now let’s you know that the correct translation is: Él combate con su hermano.

Los cachorros invaden la cocina.
The cockroaches invade the closet.
The cockroaches inhabit the closet.
The puppies invade the kitchen.
The puppies leave the kitchen.
The words los cachorros are Spanish for the puppies. This means that the first and second answers can be eliminated. The words la cocina are Spanish for the kitchen. The third and last answers have both translated this correctly. The verb invaden is Spanish for invade. This means that the last answer can now be eliminated. The correct translation is: The puppies invade the kitchen.

Yo pienso que él está en el sótano.
I believe what he is involved in.
I present what is the story.
I propose that he is in the bathroom.
I think that he is in the basement.
The word que as used here is Spanish for that. This means that the first and second answers can be eliminated. Notice that there is no accent mark on this word. If you add an accent mark above the letter e giving you the word qué, then you get the Spanish word for what. That accent mark totally changes the word. The verb pienso means I think and the words el sótano means the basement. This now tells you that the correct translation is: I think that he is in the basement.
