Grade 3 Reading Literature - Word and Phrase Meanings

When reading a story, there are going to be words that are unfamiliar. Students must use context clues to determine the meanings of these unfamiliar words. Students will use the words and situations in the sentences around the unfamiliar word to determine the definition. Some definitions are literal whereas others use nonliteral language. In this quiz, the students will determine the meaning of words using the context clues.

Story - The Family Picnic

Sally and her family took a family picnic every month. The weather had to be good to take this trip. This day, it was beautiful. Sally’s mom made an AMPLE amount of food for the family of six. They would be completely full by the end of the picnic. Sally’s dad also PURCHASED two bottles of soda from the local store on their way to the park.

The family finds a field for the picnic. However, they are RELUCTANT to have the picnic there. There are many ants and anthills on this field. Sally’s mom thinks the ants will ANNOY them. She thinks the ants will get into their food.

The family decides to stay in this field. Sally’s mom lays out a blanket. Then she takes out the food. The ants move towards it. Sally’s mom knows that ants are a CHALLENGE. She does everything to keep the ants off of the food. She moves the food. She covers the food, but nothing works.

“This is ABSURD. We should never have had our picnic here,” Sally’s mom says in an angry way. “The ants are everywhere.”

“Be PATIENT. I will spray them with this bug spray. The ants will PERISH,” Sally’s dad says.

“Yes, but the bodies of the ants will be on the blanket,” Sally’s mom says. “I hope the ants will FLEE instead and run away from our blanket.” It only took a SOLITARY push of the bug spray can and the ants ran away. The can was still almost full.
