Campcraft and survival are very important parts of the Scout Movement. Scouts learn to be respectful of the wild spaces around them and to "Leave No Trace," leaving nature as it is found. They learn how to identify both edible and poisonous plants, as well as which types of wood are best for starting a fire. Scouts also learn to understand the areas surrounding them and to read natural signs.
For instance, rivers typically flow downhill and will eventually lead to larger bodies of water. If lost, following a river downstream can be a good strategy to find people who can help.
