"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." - paraphrase of Plutarch, commonly attributed to William Butler Yeats.
"Education" is often considered to be a process whereby knowledge is imparted from one person to another, as if knowledge were a commodity. This view of education is encapsulated in the image of an empty container being filled up with facts. Interestingly, however, the word "education" derives from Latin, educare and French, éducation, both of which refer to the upbringing of the young, rather than to imparting knowledge. Education in this sense concerns the forming of a person. How do you feel about your own education: are you passively absorbing facts, or do you ever feel as if a fire has been lit within?
