One typical problem in spelling arises when you encounter a pair of homophones. For instance, "compliment" and "complement" sound the same, but have two different meanings. In each case the second syllable is unstressed: the i of "compliment" and the e of "complement" are pronounced as a schwa (written like this: ǝ).
