Fascinating Fact:

A timeline is a line that shows dates in order. It helps us see what happened first and next.

In KS1 History, children learn useful words that help them talk about the past. Vocabulary like past, present, timeline and century makes it easier to explain when events happened.

  • Past: A time that has already happened, such as yesterday, last year or long ago.
  • Present: The time that is happening now, such as today or this moment.
  • Timeline: A straight line that shows events in date order so we can see which came first and which came later.
What does past mean in KS1 history?

In KS1 history, the past means any time before now. It could be your last birthday, your grandparents’ childhood or events that happened hundreds of years ago.

What is a timeline for children?

A timeline for children is a simple line with dates and pictures in order. It shows when events happened so children can see what came first, next and last.

How can I help my child learn history words?

You can help by using history words in everyday talk, looking at old photos together, making simple timelines and playing games that match words like past and present with examples.
