Fascinating Fact:

“Who” is tricky because wh sounds like /h/. It is spelled w-h-o.

In KS1 English Spelling, Year 2 children learn many common words that do not follow easy sound rules. These are called tricky words, and practising them helps pupils read smoothly and write with confidence.

  • Tricky word: A common word that is hard to sound out, so you learn it by practise.
  • Sound: The noise a letter or group of letters makes when you read.
  • Spell: To write a word using the correct letters in the right order.
What are tricky words in Year 2?

Tricky words in Year 2 are common words that do not follow simple phonics rules, so children need to learn the spelling by memory and regular practise.

How do you practise tricky words for KS1 spelling?

You can practise by saying the word, looking at the letters, covering it, writing it, then checking. Using the word in a short sentence also helps it stick.

Why can’t some words be sounded out in phonics?

Some words have spellings that do not match the usual sound patterns children learn first, so they cannot be sounded out easily and must be learnt as special cases.
