Fascinating Fact:

You can hear tr in train.

In KS1 English Spelling (Year 1), children practise hearing sounds in words and matching them to letter patterns. The consonants t and r often sit together at the start of a word to make the tr sound.

  • Consonant: A letter that is not a, e, i, o, or u.
  • Blend: Two consonants said closely together, like tr.
  • Beginning sound: The sound you hear at the start of a word.
What is the tr sound in Year 1 phonics and spelling?

The tr sound is made when the letters t and r are next to each other, usually at the start of a word, like “train” or “tree”. Both letters can still be heard.

Is tr a digraph?

No, tr is not a digraph. A digraph makes one sound, but tr is a blend, which means you hear the t sound and the r sound said quickly together.

How can my child practise spelling tr words at home?

Say a tr word, then ask your child to clap the first sound and write the first two letters. Practise with short words like “trip”, “tree”, and “tram”.
