When it comes to learning to spell, generally speaking English follows a number of rules. However, some words in the English language are rebellious and do their own thing. These words are called exceptions to the rule. You will have come across plenty of them in your lessons at school.
Words that follow the ‘I before E except after C’ rule are easy to learn. But what about words such as science, height and ancient? They’re the rogues and they must be learned without the rule.
There are many ways to learn how to spell new words. If you like reading books, that’s an ideal practice to improving your vocabulary. The more often you see a word, the more likely you will be to remember the order of letters.
Of course, you will be learning new words every day at school. Your teachers will have certain tricks to help you understand how and why a word is spelt as it is. By now, you will know that nearly all English words that start with a Q must be followed by a U.
Learning to spell is all about familiarity. When you come across a new word, it will be alien to you and the order of letters might not fit one of the English rules. The word ‘deficient’ doesn’t follow the I before E except after C rule and therefore needs to be remembered a different way. Finding out other related words, such as ‘deficit’ is useful – it will help you recall that the letter I is straight after the C.
Playing spelling games is another great way to improve your command of the English language.
It’s very easy! Simply click on the big orange ‘Play Now’ button above. Then choose which age level is best for you – it doesn’t have to be your exact age. If your spelling needs working on, then find an age that is not too easy but not too hard. If you’re already top of the class, you can always choose a higher age as a challenge.
There are three scores (confusing, huh?):
