Eric Arthur Blair, better known as George Orwell, was born in India in 1903 to British parents. He was educated at Eton public school and then joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma where he stayed until 1927. He then decided to pursue a career in writing.

His first book, Down and Out in Paris and London was published in 1933. He published three more novels in the 1930s but his main works of the time were The Road to Wigan Pier about impoverished miners in the Lancashire town, and Homage to Catalonia about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, in which he fought against fascism and was wounded. His two most famous books Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four are both about the dangers of dictatorships. He died in 1950 at the age of 46.
