Dickens is and was thought of as a literary giant of the Victorian age. Possibly his most famous work, A Christmas Carol, published in 1843 is still popular today. On the 8th of June 1870, Charles Dickens suffered a stroke at his home after a full day's work on his final novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. He died the next day. He had stated that he wanted to be buried at Rochester Cathedral but was instead buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. An epitaph to him reads: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens (England's most popular author) who died at his residence, Higham, near Rochester, Kent, 9 June 1870, aged 58 years. He was a sympathiser with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world."
