\nYour child is growing up in a world where Artificial Intelligence will be part of everyday life. The question is not whether they will use it \u2013 the question is whether they will learn to use it safely, wisely and confidently.<\/p>\n
That gives parents and teachers a real challenge. AI will play a huge part in the lives of today\u2019s children, but many adults are understandably nervous about it.<\/p>\n
A recent survey by King\u2019s College London found that nearly half of people prefer to avoid AI altogether and 41% are afraid of it. It is hardly surprising, then, that many adults feel cautious about encouraging the young people around them to use it.<\/p>\n
So where does that leave us?
\nSome children will grow up thinking of AI as an enemy and some will think of it as a friend. The lucky few will understand it well enough to take advantage of the great opportunities that it affords and, at the same time, keep an open mind about where it might lead us in the future.<\/p>\n
We all have our own views about the probable long-term impact of AI, but whatever our vision for the future, we must not let fear prevent us from teaching children how to use it wisely.<\/p>\n
The answer is not to leave children to explore AI on their own. The answer is to introduce them to it in a safe, educational environment where the purpose is learning, not distraction.<\/p>\n
If you happen to be among the parents who are afraid of AI, please let me gently try to persuade you that it\u2019s not all bad. Indulge me if you will and go to the quiz at:<\/p>\n
The Solar System<\/strong> It is a KS3 Science quiz that tests a student\u2019s knowledge about \u2013 you\u2019ve guessed it \u2013 the Solar System.<\/p>\n The first question is: Click any one of the four answers and see what happens. You\u2019ll notice that you are instantly told whether or not you got the answer correct and you are given a little snippet of further information.<\/p>\n But probably the most important part of the question is the fact that you will see this: Wow, now that\u2019s an invitation not to be missed.<\/p>\n Click that blue link and ask away. Here are 10 questions and comments that you might make in your interaction with Lucy. Try any or all of these in any random order:<\/p>\n 1. You say the Sun is 5,500\u00b0C, but how can we possibly know this? Each time Lucy answers, you can give her a follow-on question. It\u2019s never ending. She never gets impatient, never gets tired and never gets annoyed because you don\u2019t understand something or ask the same question twice.<\/p>\n Furthermore, you don\u2019t need to stick to factual questions. See how she handles these: That is one of the great strengths of AI when it is used properly. A child can ask a question in their own words, at their own pace, without feeling embarrassed. They can ask again. They can ask for an easier explanation. They can ask for a rhyme, a joke, a memory trick or another example.<\/p>\n Lucy is not there to replace parents or teachers. She is there to act like a patient learning companion \u2013 helping children understand, revise and enjoy their studies.<\/p>\n When you feel confident using Lucy, try it out with your kids. Show them there is nothing to be scared of. Challenge them to be curious. Help them understand that AI is not magic, and it is not something to fear.
