Looking back, I realise my parents accidentally gave me the wrong impression about university.<\/p>\n

They were kind, loving people and I had a very happy childhood, but education was never especially high on their agenda. Neither of them had gone to university themselves and, to them, higher education simply didn\u2019t seem necessary.<\/p>\n

Without really noticing it, I inherited those attitudes.<\/p>\n

By the time I left school, I had never seriously considered university for myself. To be honest, I imagined it as simply \u201cmore school\u201d \u2013 strict teachers, rigid timetables, rows of desks and classrooms that were not always the nicest places to spend your day.<\/p>\n

A couple of years later, a friend secured a place at Keele University and invited me over for a visit.<\/p>\n

I still remember the drive there. At the time, I felt quite lucky that I had joined the family business instead of facing another three or four years of education. In fact, I remember feeling slightly smug and rather sorry for my friend.<\/p>\n

But Keele was nothing like I expected.<\/p>\n

Instead of a tired school environment, Keele Hall stood in beautiful woodland grounds. The whole place felt calm, open and inspiring.<\/p>\n

At school, disruptive behaviour had often made learning difficult for everyone else in the class. But here, people actually wanted to learn.<\/p>\n

Everything felt different.<\/p>\n
