Words That Cannot be Made from Larger Words Quiz Illustration | Umbrella
Which words can and can't be made from 'umbrella'?

Words that Cannot be Made 1

This is the first in this section of our Eleven Plus Verbal Reasoning quizzes on Words That Cannot be Made from Larger Words. What is that exactly? Well, you’ll be relieved to hear, it’s probably the easiest type of question you will have to face when you come to take your exam.

Basically, you’ll be shown a long word and then four shorter ones. You have to find which one of those cannot be made from the letters in the longer one. Remember, you can only use each letter the same amount of times as it appears in the first word.

If that is not clear, then take a look at the example question we’ve placed at the beginning of the quiz. It shows you exactly how to go about solving these problems.

Example:
Which of the following words can NOT be made from the letters of the word POSITIONAL?

Postal
Opal
Notion
Posit
Pools
Satin

It doesn’t matter whether or not you know what the words mean. Just look at the letters they contain and see if they are in the word 'POSITIONAL' the correct amount of times.
The only one of the options which cannot be formed is 'notion', purely because the letter 'N' only appears once in 'POSITIONAL', but twice in ‘notion’.
