Fascinating Fact:

When you turn half a circle, that’s one hundred and eighty degrees, the difference between going forward and getting completely lost.

In 11 Plus Maths, pupils learn to describe and understand turns, angles, and direction. These early geometry skills support navigation, problem solving, and map reading in everyday life.

  • Turn: A movement around a fixed point, described in degrees such as ninety or one hundred and eighty.
  • Direction: The path along which something moves, like north, south, east, or west.
  • Angle: The space between two lines that meet at a point, measured in degrees.
How many degrees are in a half turn?

A half turn measures one hundred and eighty degrees, which means turning halfway around to face the opposite direction.

What is a quarter turn in maths?

A quarter turn measures ninety degrees and changes direction by one right angle, like turning a corner.

What does rotation mean in position and movement?

Rotation means turning around a fixed point. For example, the Earth rotates once every twenty-four hours to create day and night.

1 .
If you face East and turn through 90o anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
North
East
South
West
'Anticlockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the opposite direction to which the hands of the clock turn. 90o = a quarter turn
2 .
If you face South and turn through 270o clockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
North
East
South
West
'Clockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the direction in which the hands of the clock turn. 270o = three lots of 90o or three-quarters of a turn
3 .
If you face West and turn through 360o anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
North
East
South
West
If you turn through 360o, you will ALWAYS end up facing the same direction no matter which way you turn
4 .
If you face West and turn through 450o anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
North
East
South
West
'Anticlockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the opposite direction to which the hands of the clock turn. 450o = five lots of 90o
5 .
If you face West, what is the compass point directly behind you?
North
East
South
West
Make a little drawing and you will see that it is East
6 .
If you face South, what is the compass point directly behind you?
North
East
South
West
Make a little drawing and you will see that it is North
7 .
If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun is always in which part of the sky?
The Northern part
The Eastern part
The Southern part
The Western part
If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, the Sun is always in the Northern part of the sky
8 .
At dawn, when the Sun rises, which direction will your shadow be pointing?
North
South
East
West
The Sun rises in the East, so shadows at dawn will be pointing West
9 .
Simon and William are standing next to each other. Simon is facing South and William is facing West. If Simon turns anticlockwise through 90o, what angle must William turn through to face in the same direction as Simon?
90o clockwise
90o anticlockwise
180o
360o
'Anticlockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the opposite direction to which the hands of the clock turn. Simon turns through 90o (= a quarter turn) and ends up facing East. William will have to turn 180o, either clockwise or anticlockwise
10 .
Nelly and Elsie are standing next to each other. Nelly is facing North and Elsie is facing East. What angle must Nelly turn through to face in the OPPOSITE direction to Elsie?
360o
270o clockwise
180o
90o clockwise
Elsie is facing East, so Nelly needs to rotate until she is facing West. To do that, she can turn 270o clockwise or 90o anticlockwise
