A compass marked with intercardinal points
NE, SE, SW and NW are known as 'intercardinal points' on a compass.

Position 2 (Easy)

Welcome to the second of our Easy level quizzes on Position. In the first, we learned about the points on a compass rose which fall between North, East, South and West. Now we test your knowledge of South East, South West, North East and North West.

As you will remember, there are 90o (a quarter turn) between the cardinal compass points of North, East, South and West. But there are 45o (an eighth of a turn) between the cardinal points and the intercardinal ones of NE, SE, SW and NW.

They are actually very easy to remember – NE falls between North and East; SE falls between South and East; SW falls between South and West; and NW falls between North and West.

Now, it’s time for the quiz. Think carefully about each question before you choose your answer – it would be terrible if you lost your bearings!

1 .
If you face NW and turn through 180o clockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
NE
SE
NW
SW
'Clockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the same direction as the hands of the clock turn. 180o = two lots of 90o or a half turn
2 .
If you face NE and turn through 180o anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
NE
SE
NW
SW
'Anticlockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the opposite direction to which the hands of the clock turn. 180o = two lots of 90o or a half turn
3 .
If you face NE and turn through 135° anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
W
NW
SW
S
135o = three lots of 45o or three-eighths of a rotation (turn): 45o is an eighth of a turn
4 .
If you face South and turn through 225o anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
NE
N
NW
W
225o = five lots of 45o or five-eighths of a rotation (turn): 45o is an eighth of a turn
5 .
If you face SW and turn through 360o clockwise, what direction will you be facing now?
NE
NW
SW
SE
It doesn't make any difference whether you turn clockwise or anticlockwise because you are making a whole turn; this means that you will always end up facing the same way no matter which way you turn
6 .
If you face SW, what direction is right behind you?
NW
NE
SW
SE
Look at the compass rose if you can't see this
7 .
If you face NE, what direction is right behind you?
NW
NE
SE
SW
Look at the compass rose if you can't see this
8 .
Neil and Sergei are standing next to each other. Neil is facing NE and Sergei is facing SE. If Neil turns anticlockwise through 225o, what angle must Sergei turn through to face in the same direction as Neil?
45o clockwise
90o clockwise
45o anticlockwise
90o anticlockwise
Neil turns through 225o (= five lots of 45o) and ends up facing South. Sergei will have to turn clockwise through 45o (an eighth of a turn) or anticlockwise through 315o (seven-eighths of a turn)
9 .
Sarah and Wilma are standing next to each other. Sarah is facing South and Wilma is facing West. If Sarah turns clockwise through 135o, what angle must Wilma turn through to face in the same direction as Sarah?
225o clockwise
225o anticlockwise
315o clockwise
315o anticlockwise
Sarah turns three-eighths of a rotation and ends up facing NW. Wilma must turn either 315o anticlockwise or 45o clockwise
10 .
Which point lies between NE and SE?
N
E
S
W
