NE, SE, SW and NW are known as 'intercardinal points' on a compass.

Position 2 (Easy)

Welcome to the second of our Easy level quizzes on Position. In the first, we learned about the points on a compass rose which fall between North, East, South and West. Now we test your knowledge of South East, South West, North East and North West.

As you will remember, there are 90^o (a quarter turn) between the cardinal compass points of North, East, South and West. But there are 45^o (an eighth of a turn) between the cardinal points and the intercardinal ones of NE, SE, SW and NW.

They are actually very easy to remember – NE falls between North and East; SE falls between South and East; SW falls between South and West; and NW falls between North and West.

Now, it’s time for the quiz. Think carefully about each question before you choose your answer – it would be terrible if you lost your bearings!

If you face NW and turn through 180^o clockwise, what direction will you be facing now?

'Clockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the same direction as the hands of the clock turn. 180^o = two lots of 90^o or a half turn

If you face NE and turn through 180^o anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?

'Anticlockwise' means that you turn (rotate) in the opposite direction to which the hands of the clock turn. 180^o = two lots of 90^o or a half turn

If you face NE and turn through 135° anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?

135^o = three lots of 45^o or three-eighths of a rotation (turn): 45^o is an eighth of a turn

If you face South and turn through 225^o anticlockwise, what direction will you be facing now?

225^o = five lots of 45^o or five-eighths of a rotation (turn): 45^o is an eighth of a turn

5 .

If you face SW and turn through 360^o clockwise, what direction will you be facing now?

It doesn't make any difference whether you turn clockwise or anticlockwise because you are making a whole turn; this means that you will always end up facing the same way no matter which way you turn

Neil and Sergei are standing next to each other. Neil is facing NE and Sergei is facing SE. If Neil turns anticlockwise through 225^o, what angle must Sergei turn through to face in the same direction as Neil?

Neil turns through 225^o (= five lots of 45^o) and ends up facing South. Sergei will have to turn clockwise through 45^o (an eighth of a turn) or anticlockwise through 315^o (seven-eighths of a turn)

Sarah and Wilma are standing next to each other. Sarah is facing South and Wilma is facing West. If Sarah turns clockwise through 135^o, what angle must Wilma turn through to face in the same direction as Sarah?

Sarah turns three-eighths of a rotation and ends up facing NW. Wilma must turn either 315^o anticlockwise or 45^o clockwise
