Negative Numbers 2 (Difficult)
So, you have made it to the second of our difficult Eleven Plus maths quizzes on negative numbers. If you have made it this far, then negatives are no problem for you… or are they? If so, don’t worry – this quiz will give you more opportunity to practice adding and subtracting negatives.
In the previous quiz, each question had an accompanying number line to make things that little bit easier. This time, you will have to rely solely on your wits. These rules should help:
- Adding a negative is the same as subtracting a positive (5 + -2 is the same as 5 -2)
- Subtracting a negative is the same a adding a positive (5 - -2 is the same as 5 + 2)
- The higher the negative, the lower the number (-5 is lower than -2)
If you can remember these rules, then this collection of problems will be a doddle. Just make sure you read each question thoroughly before you pick your answer. Good luck!
-12 + 8 - 7 + 16
-3 + 10 - 8 + 16
-3 + 10 - 8 + 16 = (10 - 3) = (16 - 8) = 7 + 8 = 15
-16 + 5 - 14 + 20
-16 + 5 - 14 + 20 = (20 + 5) - (16 = 14) = 25 - 30 = -5
12 - 24 + 20 - 6
20 - 6 = 14
14 - 12 = 2
12 + -10 - 8 + 4
12 + -10 - 8 + 4 is the same as 12 - 10 - 8 + 4
-18 - 20 - 8 + 20
-18 - 20 - 8 + 20 = -18 - 8 = -26
-4 + 6 - 8 + 10
-4 + 6 - 8 + 10 is the same as (6 + 10) - (4 + 8) = 16 - 12 = 4
-16 + 5 - 14 + 15
-16 + 5 - 14 + 15 = (5 + 15) - (16 + 14) = 20 - 30 = -10
-18 + 15 - 15 + 20
-18 + 15 - 15 + 20 = -18 + 20 = 2
-13 + 7 - 2 + -30
-13 + 7 - 2 + -30 = -13 + 7 - 2 - 30 = -38
