Measures 2 (Difficult)

Measuring forces, weight, and gravity takes maths beyond the classroom. In 11 Plus Maths, pupils explore how numbers explain movement, mass, and the world around us.

Fascinating Fact:

The mass of the Moon is 7.35 times ten to the power of twenty-two kilograms, yet its gravity is only one sixth of Earth’s, a reminder that weight depends on where you stand.

In 11 Plus Maths, students deepen their understanding of measurement by exploring mass, weight, and gravity. These concepts help them solve practical problems that link mathematics with real-world science.

  • Mass: The amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms or grams.
  • Weight: The force of gravity acting on an object’s mass, measured in newtons.
  • Gravity: The force that pulls objects toward each other, most noticeably toward the Earth.
What is the difference between mass and weight?

Mass measures how much matter something has, while weight measures the pull of gravity on that mass. Weight changes with gravity; mass does not.

Why does the Moon have weaker gravity than Earth?

The Moon’s gravity is weaker because it has less mass than Earth, meaning it exerts a smaller gravitational pull on objects.

What units are used for measuring weight and mass?

Weight is measured in newtons (N) and mass is measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg), depending on the scale of the object.

1 .
A league is equal to which of the following?
Half a mile
10 kilometres
3 miles
100 metres
A league is the distance a man can walk comfortably in 1 hour. It's equal to 3 miles
2 .
How many ounces are there in 1 pound?
16
12
24
8
There are 16 ounces in a pound. 1 ounce = 28.345 grams
3 .
A gallon = 8 pints, but how many pints are in a quart?
2
4
6
12
A quart is a quarter of a gallon, so equal to 2 pints
4 .
1 tonne = 1,000 kg. What weight is equal to 1,016 kg?
1 metric ton
1 hundredweight
1 ton
1 stone
A metric ton (tonne) is very close in weight to an imperial ton (ton). 1 ton = 2,240 pounds, or 1,016 kg
5 .
What is the name of the imperial unit equal to 112 pounds? Its symbol is Cwt.
A ton
An ounce
A stone
A hundredweight
A hundredweight = 8 stone, and 1 stone = 14 pounds
6 .
The maximum load a lorry can carry is 25 tonnes. If 1 ton = 0.984 tonnes, how many tons can the lorry carry, rounded to the nearest?
25 tons
24 tons
26 tons
23 tons
1 tonne = 0.984 tons, so to convert tonnes to tons, simply divideby 0.984: 25 ÷ 0.984 = 25.4, which we round down to 25
7 .
Jane walked 3 and a quarter miles to school. If 1 mile = 1.61 km, how many metres did jane walk?
3,250 m
3,750 m
4,250 m
5,232.5 m
To convert miles to km just multiply by 1.61: 3.25 x 1.61 = 5.2325
Next convert into metres by multiplying by 100
8 .
There are 16 ounces in 1 pound. If 1 kg = 2.2 pounds, how many grams are in 24 ounces?
680 grams
68 grams
6,800 grams
6.8 grams
First convert ounces to pounds: 24 ÷ 16 = 1.5
Next convert pounds to kg by dividing by 2.2: 1.5 ÷ 2.2 = 0.68
Finally, convert kg to g by multiplying by 1,000
9 .
The moon is 384,400 km away from us. If 1.61 km = 1 mile, how many miles away is the moon?
618,240 miles
438,924 miles
350,726 miles
238,509 miles
To convert km to miles just divide by 1.61: 384,400 ÷ 1.61 = 238,509
10 .
How many fluid ounces are there in 1 pint?
16
20
12
24
There are 16 ounces in a pound but - confusingly - there are 20 fluid ounces in 1 pint. Nobody said imperial measures were easy!
